I’m a big fan of Sherlock and was very pleased to hear a commonly used mindfulness phrase in a recent episode – “It is what it is”. I love this phrase as to me it is so helpful and really sums up a lot about mindfulness. It’s simple, it helps you to rationalise and accept things as they are and it is so helpful to reduce overthinking.
We can often spend a lot of time and energy wanting things to be different – maybe thinking back to the past and wishing things were like they used to be. Or grasping to the future thinking about how things could be different. This type of thinking is often not functional, logical thinking that we need to live our lives but is instead unhelpful “chitter chatter” in our heads which takes us away from the only thing that is true and real – THE PRESENT MOMENT!
Therefore in times when things perhaps aren’t going the way I want them to and I can’t change them I find it helpful to say to myself “it is what it is” – this helps me feel calm, content and accept things just as they are in the present moment.
Funnily, I googled this phrase whilst writing this and the top answer that came up was the Urban Dictionary who basically translate it as “f**k it!” – often another helpful response to things we have no control over !!
